A smile flickered across Cleo’s face. “Huh! It’s like that?”
Daisy’s cheeks grew warm. “Um, not sure what you mean.”
“Sure you don’t.” Cleo tapped something in front of her that Daisy couldn’t see. “I get why you left. We’ll figure this out. I’ve been working with Angel on the information your new friends on Laire have on the Inkral tech. We can use this. If we show this to High Command, let them know how close the Inkral were to using this, and that you helped stopped that, they may be lenient on you.”
“You think they’ll let me keep my job?”
“It’s possible. No guarantees, though. We still have a case to fight. If you hadn’t been infected and fought to get this out of you, we’d have never known about the Inkral plans until it was too late.”
“And Rexx?”
Cleo’s expression hardened. “He kidnapped you.”
“I went willingly.”
“Rexx disobeyed orders.”
“So did I. But he was the one who found Atticus and Estelle. Rexx stopped the Inkral.” Daisy lifted her chin. “Either we both come back, or neither of us does.”
“If you don’t come back, you may end up in prison.”
Nervousness shuddered through Daisy. “It won’t come to that.”
Cleo huffed out a breath. “If it does, I’m quitting, too. As will this whole team. We’re right behind you on this.”
A warmth spread through her chest. She was still part of an amazing team. “Then High Command won’t stand a chance.”
“Just don’t get cocky in front of them. Stay humble. And make sure Rexx does the same. If he threatens to kill them, it’s game over.”
“I promise he won’t say a word about killing when we talk to High Command.”
“Leave this with me. We’re making arrangements to collect you. I’ll know more by then. Stay safe. See you soon.”
Daisy cut the comm and stared at the blank screen. With Cleo and the rest of the team on their side, they’d find a way through this and convince High Command they should stay on the Apocalypse.
She returned to the bedroom above the vets Estelle had let them use. It was dark and quiet. She slid off her shoes.
Two warm hands settled on her shoulders. She’d gotten so used to Rexx appearing out of the shadows that she no longer flinched when he came out of nowhere.
“How did it go?” he asked.
“Better than I expected. Cleo’s angry. High Command want answers. I still have a job. So do you, for now. They have questions, though. This isn’t over.” His hands sliding down her sides muddled her thoughts. Every time he touched her, she ignited.
Daisy turned just as Rexx pulled off his T-shirt. It was too tight, even though he’d borrowed it from Atticus. She bit her bottom lip. The sight of all that hard muscle had her almost drooling.
“You don’t want to talk about next steps?” She backed away, her breath speeding up as she saw the bulge in his pants.
“Soon. Although you know I’m never big on talking.” Rexx followed her, hunger in his purple eyes as his gaze landed on her mouth.
She enjoyed the display of his rippling muscles as he stalked her like she was prey. He was scarred, warrior-worn perfection.
Daisy stroked a finger over one of the neat operation scars. These were scars of torture and survival. Rexx had faced so much pain. She planned to give him nothing but pleasure and joy for the rest of their lives together.
His pants and boots were gone in a flash. No underwear kept his cock from rising up.
She licked her lips, and he growled.
Rexx grabbed her and pulled her against his chest. His kiss was urgent as he plundered her mouth, his cock pressed against her belly.
