“Of course.”

“And keep her calm,” Angel said. “She doesn’t know about any of this.”

Rexx hadn’t stopped searching for Daisy while they’d been talking. “I’ll keep her safe. I’ll make sure she isn’t harmed.”

“See you soon,” Cleo said.

Rexx cut the comm link and continued to follow Daisy’s trail. He had to find her, and he had to get that damn alien tech out of her. How in all the twisted wormholes in the universe had it gotten inside her in the first place?

He took a long, deep breath, trying to quell the deep, bone jarring shudder that hit him. He knew all about the devastating effects of being someone’s experiment. It left its mark, and not just in the form of physical scars.

Rexx walked out of the trees, and his heart lodged in his throat. Daisy was flat out on the ground, her arms and legs spread out and her face in the dirt.

He raced to her side, scooped her into his arms, and held her close. Stars! She was burning up.

“Stay with me. Nothing bad will happen to you.” The words choked out of him as he checked her pulse and held her tight. If she died, he’d be destroyed. He couldn’t lose her.

He’d do whatever it took to get her well.

Chapter 6

Daisy awoke to the feel of a soft mattress underneath her and clean sheets covering her body. The room she was in was dark.

She groaned as she tried to make sense of where she was and how she’d gotten there. The last thing she remembered, she’d been on Asiram.

Daisy jerked, and her muscles tensed. The hounds. She remembered those. And Rexx warning her to stay back. And then what?

She went to lift her arm, but it wouldn’t move far. She twisted her wrist, and her stomach did a somersault. What the fuck? She’d been shackled to the bed.

The door to the room slid open. The lights lifted, and Angel walked in. “Hey, I got an alert to let me know you were awake. How are you feeling?”

“Um, like I’ve missed out on something big. Why do you have me tied up in the medical room?”

Angel pursed her lips. “You don’t remember what happened on Asiram?” She ran a scanner over Daisy.

“Some of it. I didn’t feel so good. And there were hounds. They attacked. Was I injured? I don’t feel like I’ve been bitten anywhere.”

“No, the hounds did nothing to you.” Angel glanced at the door. “Rexx is right outside. I’m worried he’ll tear this place apart if he doesn’t see you soon.”

“Why would you keep him away from me? Let him in. And while you’re at it, untie me. You still haven’t explained the restraints.”

“I can’t untie you. Not just yet. We’re still running tests.”

“For what? What are you keeping from me?” Panic flooded through Daisy as a few patchy memories hit her. She’d been a real bitch to Rexx during their mission. Had she abandoned him when the hounds found them? That had to be wrong. She’d never do that.

A fist thudded on the door.

Angel sighed and set down the scanner. “You won’t need many guesses to figure out who that is.”

“I want to see Rexx. He’ll tell me what’s going on.”

“He doesn’t know any more than we do. But I’m sure he’ll want to help.” Angel walked to the door, unlocked it, and it slid open.

Rexx charged in, his purple eyes sparking with anger.

Angel risked her life by standing in front of him and placing a hand against his chest. “We’ve talked about this. Keep it calm and stay quiet. Daisy’s only just woken up. She’s still confused about what happened. Don’t do anything to alarm her.”

His gaze snagged on Daisy’s. “I won’t do anything to harm her.”
