He’d taken two steps when a blast of laser skimmed over his head.
Karn ducked and rolled. He jumped to his feet as he looked around for Marcus.
The coward was hiding.
As Karn viewed the inside of the shuttle, he realized there were few places for Marcus to conceal himself. The ship was small. There were two closed doors either side of the corridor. He must be in one of those. But where was Ivy?
He didn’t risk calling out. Instead, he tried the first door. It was a small sleeping area. It was empty.
Karn twisted around as the door behind him opened. Marcus pointed a laser at his head.
Karn launched himself at Marcus and angled the laser away from his face. He slammed Marcus’s hand against the wall, an animal snarl ripping from his throat.
“Have you come to save your girlfriend?” Marcus spat through gritted teeth.
“I don’t like the company she’s keeping.” Karn twisted Marcus’s wrist until he dropped the laser.
Marcus swung a wild punch at Karn, grazing the side of his head.
Karn tackled him to the ground. “What have you done with her?”
“What do you care?” Marcus crawled away on his hands and knees, heading for the fallen laser.
“No, you don’t.” Karn grabbed Marcus’s ankles. He slammed him to the ground and dropped punches on top of him.
Karn’s face burned. Marcus had betrayed Ivy. The woman he loved. His fists slowed. He loved Ivy. He was balls to the wall in love with Ivy Blain.
Marcus twisted underneath him. “Get off me. I need this.”
“You need nothing. You keep your hands off Ivy. She’s mine.” A satisfying thrill raced through Karn.
“We can share her. Whatever money I make from the auction, you can have twenty percent.”
Karn grabbed Marcus’s head and slammed it into the ground. That felt good.
“Shit! Okay. Thirty percent.”
“How can you trade her like a commodity? Ivy is amazing. She’s beautiful, smart, and talented. She’s so much better than you’ll ever be. You don’t deserve her. You never did. You are never touching Ivy again.”
Marcus grunted as Karn emphasized his words with more punches. “Not even for fifty percent?”
Karn reared back and landed a final blow on Marcus’s head. “Not even for all the titanium on Eert.”
Marcus groaned, and his head slumped to the side.
Karn heard a gasp. He jumped off Marcus when he saw Ivy in the doorway. Her eyes were wide as she stared at Marcus.
“Ivy, I had no choice.” He gestured to Marcus.
“Hold it right there.”
Karn turned to see a Prodigy security officer in the corridor, his laser aimed at him.
“I can explain everything.” Karn took a step toward the security officer, and he shot him.
