I watched as she checked the house before starting toward the driveway. I could barely contain my excitement. A smile began to spread across my face.

It was almost swiped away when I saw that her car stopped short of the driveway. She looked toward the garage and grimaced.

What is she doing? Park, bitch!

“Come on,” I whispered.

She looked at my car again.

I put one hand against the window frame as she turned away. She recognized my car and pulled away. My eyes stayed glued on her until her car disappeared.

My red Nissan Maxima sat in the driveway with the Marceline’s bumper sticker facing the street. And just like that she was gone. I was so close to getting revenge and it just slipped through my fingers.

As I stood there sulking I heard my brother walking down the stairs. He was dressed in all black, with a pair of gloves on. He was ready.

“Where she at?”

I looked past him toward the kitchen.

“She left.”

He stepped around me to look outside. When he turned back, the question had already left his face.

“The hell you mean she left?”

“She saw my car,” my voice trailed off.

“Of course she did. I told your dumbass to park in the garage.”

“Watch who you calling dumb.”

“Then stop doing dumb shit.”

I let the curtain fall. He could stand there insulting me all he wanted. It wasn’t going to bring her back.

“I meant to move it.”

“You had all morning.”

“I was busy getting everything else together.”

“Like what, Kira?”

I looked at him. He waited for an answer, pulling one glove off while I tried to come up with something that didn’t sound ridiculous.

I had changed my clothes twice. I had checked the appointment time even though I knew exactly when she was coming. Then I’d gotten to the window early because I wanted to watch her walk up to my door.

Meanwhile, my fucking car was outside advertising who lived here.

“Fine. I forgot.”

Honestly, I didn’t think she would recognize my car. I was expecting her to be so desperate for a job, she would pay no attention to it. My garage is filled with things from the restaurants and I was too lazy to move them around.

Kyle removed the other glove and put them both in his pocket.

That irritated me more than him calling me dumb. He was already finished with the whole thing while I was still trying to figure out how to get her back.

“Maybe I can call the agency,” I suggested.
