And the last thing he heard before dying was that his beloved brother would meet the same fate. I should’ve been satisfied but something was missing.
It was the fact that I didn’t have my son with me. It was that Justice didn’t have a real plan for Storie. What could be done about her?
I got up and hopped in the shower. It was Monday morning and I had made an appointment with the OB-GYN. Justice was insistent on coming although I felt like he needed to take a day to himself. He had been doing so much and was exhausted.
After showering, I slipped into a burnt orange sweater dress and a pair of brown boots. My stomach still looked the same, but I turned sideways in the mirror anyway. The next few months were going to pass quickly, revealing my pregnant belly. Right now, the nausea was doing enough announcing for the both of us.
Justice knocked while I was putting on my earrings.
Unable to contain my excitement, I rushed to open the door without putting in the second earring. Instantly he pushed inside and brought me into his embrace.
“Good morning,” I managed before his mouth dove into mine.
I held on to the front of his jacket as he kissed me deeply. He tasted like mint, and I wanted to keep him right there for a while. We had an appointment to get to, but suddenly I wasn’t in much of a rush.
He pulled back just enough to look at me.
“You ready?”
“You’re the one distracting me.”
“I just got here.”
“And already acting up.”
He smiled before bending to kiss my belly through my dress.
“What’s up, little Banks?”
I laughed and put my hand on his head.
“The baby can’t answer you.”
“I ain’t ask you to translate.”
He kissed my stomach again before standing. I reached up and brushed my thumb beneath his eye.
“Did you sleep?”
“A little.” I could tell he was lying because he didn’t want me to fuss.
“You look tired.”
“Damn. You was just kissing me like I looked good,” he chuckled.
“You do look good. You also look like you need to lie down.”
“We can arrange that after your appointment.”
“Justice.”
“I’m good, baby.”
He took my hand, but his smile faded before we reached the door.
“I need to tell you something about Storie.”
I stopped.
