Knox

God, his laughter.

He genuinely seemed happy.

Or at least, I convinced myself he was.

Fuck…

What if I’ve been forcing this whole thing?

From the start, Knox has been crystal clear about not wanting a relationship with me, and what have I done?

Push, push, and push… stupidly hoping that if he just got to know the real me, he’d change his mind and choose me.

That he’d give us a chance.

But… maybe that was just pathetic wishful thinking.

I mean, what is so great about me anyway?

I’m a high-maintenance brat with no family.

I only have three real friends; I’m lonely, I always hide behind sarcasm and a ridiculous imagination just to keep from getting hurt, and beneath it all… I’m scared.

Hell, the only thing I have to offer is money, and that’s the one thing Knox hates the most.

Yeah…

I wouldn’t choose me either.

I close the book and sigh as my thoughts race toward the absolute worst-case scenarios.

The darkest one being… is this going to be over before we even leave the cabin?

Ugh…

I hate my stupid, overthinking brain.

Finally, the guest room door opens, and Knox steps out looking tense and distant.

Yep…

I’m fucked.

He comes over and sits on the couch right next to me, his hands doing something I never thought Knox was capable of doing… they fidget.

Oh, crap.

How nervous does a Delta Force epic legend need to be to fidget?!

We are all going to die.

Yep…

We are all going to die.

“Is everything okay?” I ask, not really wanting to know the answer.

“We need to talk…” he says so softly that it makes me want to cry.
