I turn toward him. “Interesting how I wasn’t involved in that decision.”
“You are now.”
I narrow my eyes. “I have somewhere else I can stay.”
“We found that too,” Kieran says.
I look at him. “My other apartment?”
“It wasn’t difficult. You rented it under your brother’s name, for fuck’s sake.”
Okay. Maybe using Joey’s name wasn’t the brilliant criminal masterstroke I once thought it was.
Duncan ignores the whiskey Kieran offers him and takes two bottles of water instead. He twists the cap off one before handing it to me.
I accept it without thinking, but it’s such a small fucking thing that I almost miss what he did. He didn’t ask whether I was thirsty. He just noticed I hadn’t had anything since we left the dining room and brought me water. The same man who just told me he sometimes has trouble identifying what he feels remembered to open the bottle before putting it in my hand.
I take a drink while he talks quietly with Kieran. Maybe I’ve been asking Duncan for explanations when I should have been paying more attention to what he does.
His phone rings before I can think about that too much. He checks the screen. “Conor.”
He answers and puts the call on speaker.
“Uncle Duncan, we found the photographer,” Conor says. “Same guy at every location.”
My stomach tightens.
“Where is he?” There’s nothing loud about Duncan’s voice, but the change in it sends heat crawling over my skin.
“I handled it.”
Oh, fuck.
“Please tell me that doesn’t mean you killed him. Taking pictures for money makes him an asshole, not someone who deserves to die.”
“I take it I’m on speaker,” Conor says. “No, Nash, I didn’t kill him. I even stopped Declan from hurting him.”
That is both reassuring and slightly concerning.
“I paid him and got what information he had about whoever hired him. I sent everything to Ronan.”
“Who hired him?” Duncan asks.
The low edge in his voice goes straight to my cock. Jesus Christ. Apparently learning my Daddy is a clinical psychopath has done absolutely nothing to make him less attractive. Holy shit. My inner diva is having a moment. If this weren’t such a serious conversation, I’d already be on my knees in front of him. Focus, Nash. Murder first. Daddy playtime later.
“He was contracted through email and paid in cash by courier. Ronan and Colton are looking into it.” Kieran checks his watch. “Or they will be. It’s bath and bedtime for Ollie.”
“Aww.”
Both brothers look at me.
“What? Ronan scared the absolute shit out of me the first time I met him. Now I’m picturing him giving a toddler a bubble bath.”
“It is sweet,” Alessia says. “Unless you interrupt them.”
That makes it even better.
Duncan holds out his hand. “We should go.”
