I glance at Dex, who looks just as confused as I am.
Apparently this isn't lunch.
We're fucked.
“Oh my God!”
Chiara's voice makes everyone look up.
She's standing beside one of the cabinets holding two ridiculously big mugs, old enough that whatever design was originally painted on them is starting to fade.
“Nora, remember these mugs!”
Nora freezes and her whole face changes.
“No way.”
She gets up so fast her chair scrapes against the tile.
Chiara puts the mugs on the table. One says CHIARA, the other NORA.
Nora picks hers up with both hands and stares at it.
“Oh my God.”
Her thumb moves over her name before she looks at her sister.
“Oh, Nonno used to make us breakfast with these!”
Chiara's eyes are already filling, and Nora's do the same.
Then, at exactly the same time, they both yell, “Uovo sbattuto con lo zucchero!”
They burst out laughing.
Their grandmother watches them from the stove, but she isn't laughing. She's smiling, and it's different. Quiet and full of something I recognize even if I don't understand a word being spoken in this house.
Love.
The kind that remembers you small.
Nora wipes at her cheek and turns toward us, still holding the mug against her chest.
“Our grandfather used to beat egg yolks with sugar until they were really creamy, then add hot milk. He made it for us every morning and put it in these mugs.”
“Oh.”
Lexy's face says exactly what her mouth doesn't.
That sounds fucking disgusting.
Nora doesn't notice, or doesn't care.
“I'll make it for everyone tomorrow.”
Lexy opens her mouth.
I kick her under the table.
