“Yes. It just takes a little more effort to get to it.”

Before I can answer, someone calls Eleanor’s name from the terrace. She touches my arm lightly.

“Enjoy the rest of the evening, Blaire.”

“I will,” I say.

Eleanor gives me one last warm smile before returning to her guests. When I look back toward the lawn, Ross is watching me, he gives a slow nod and a smile. I smile back as I begin to walk toward his direction.

I’ve barely made it back toward the edge of the lawn when Sebastian falls into step beside me, drink in hand and amusement already written across his face.

“So,” he says, glancing toward Ross, “Geneva.”

I laugh. “What about it?”

Sebastian takes a sip. “I’m just impressed. Apparently my brother has developed an intense professional interest in archives.”

“He was very committed to the work,” I say.

“I’m sure he was.”

I give him a look, and Sebastian grins.

“He’s been easier to live with lately,” he says.

“Less analytical asshole, more actual human being. I’m not complaining.”

Before I can answer, someone calls his name from behind us. Sebastian lifts his glass toward me.

“Enjoy the miracle while it lasts.”

Then he turns away, still smiling, and disappears back into the crowd.

By the time the party begins to thin out, the garden has gone quieter. Ross finds me near the far edge of the lawn, where the music is softer and the lights from the terrace barely reach. I’m carrying my heels in one hand now, my feet cool against the grass, and he looks at me with the faintest smile as he comes closer.

“You disappeared,” he says.

“I walked twenty yards.”

“That still counts.”

I smile and look back toward the house. Most of the remaining guests have gathered near the terrace, leaving this side of the garden almost empty.

Ross steps closer and lowers his voice.

“Are you heading back tonight?”

“I should.”

“Do you want a car?”

“Yes,” I say. “Eventually.”

His hand settles at my waist, warm and familiar.

“I’d come with you,” he says, “but my father wants me for something before everyone leaves.”

“I know.”
