City Girl for the Cowboy Daddy

Four attachments followed.

A draft application.

A site sketch.

A preliminary event description.

Insurance requirements.

I looked at the date in the corner of my screen.

It was June 15.

July 1 was sixteen days away.

August 15 was less than eight weeks out.

My first answer was no.

It arrived cleanly, reasonably, supported by experience. A rural event I had not scoped, for a client I had never met, under a county deadline sixteen days away. Livestock. Temporary occupancy. Emergency access. Weather exposure. Food service. Potential alcohol. Spectator fencing.

No.

I reached for the mouse to close it.

Then I looked at the line again.

One day.

Four hundred people.

One client.

No subcontractors.

Small.

Not uncomplicated. Small and uncomplicated were unrelated conditions. A birthday dinner could produce a fatality with one overloaded outlet and enough arrogance.

But small meant visible.

Small meant a beginning and an end that could be held in the same thought.

I downloaded the attachments.

The draft application identified the applicant as Carrow Creek Ranch and described the event as a one-day rodeo. Attendance estimate: four hundred spectators, competitors, workers, and vendors combined.

I highlighted combined.

That number would change.

Numbers given before ticketing opened always changed.

The site sketch looked hand-drawn.

Not digitally casual. Literally drawn by hand on graph paper, photographed at an angle, and inserted into a PDF. Rectangles labeled ARENA, SALE BARN, PARKING, BUNKHOUSE, HOUSE, and CREEK sat beneath an arrow pointing north.

A line marked EMERGENCY ROUTE ran directly through the proposed vendor area.
