“Now.” I grit out. Whatever she sees in my expression makes her scurry away.
It takes me a while, standing on numb legs, processing the ache, getting used to it again, and then I move.
The elevator doors slide shut, sealing me inside, and I catch my reflection in the mirrored wall.
Staring at what I truly am.
Worthless.
I am five years old again and being abandoned.
My computer screen lights up with the elevator feed just as the doors slide open. Elara steps inside, and the moment she turns towards my penthouse, everything in me stills.
Her movements are slow as if she’s unsure, staring at it like she’s debating something and the moment the doors close again, I see her frame crumpling, her legs giving out as she sinks to the floor.
Her phone goes straight to voicemail as I keep on calling her while watching last night’s feed on my laptop. She left around three in the morning.
She fucking left me. Again.
My gaze drops to the angry scratch carved down my chest, starting at my sternum, dragging all the way to my stomach.
She staked a claim on me; she cannot leave me.
I rewind the footage, jaw tightening, then switch to the feed outside her building. The hallway camera flickers to life, and I’m met with silence. I pull up the feed inside her flat.
Nothing.
The pool of messages I’ve drowned our chat in—questions turning to anger, anger to pleading, pleading to worry, and back to anger—haunts me every time I look at my screen.
ME: Where are you?
Why did you leave?
I thought you loved me?
Is this how it's going to be every time I put my guard down?
Did I hurt you?
I'm sorry if I did, please come back.
Elara!
Did I not tell you love demands pain? I knew I was right, you didn't have to prove it.
Come back to me! I'm not fucking joking, Elara.
Elara, answer your fucking phone and say you're sorry for trying to leave me.
Elara, baby. Please, I'm begging you.
Elara!
Where are you? I'm worried. Don't answer me. But just tell me you're okay.
Malyshka, please.
It's fucking over.
