“Can I see?”
The photographer turned the screen toward her, and Mila immediately started asking questions.
I stepped closer to Ellis. “You brought her straight from school?”
“Yeah. She asked where I was going.”
“And you told her?”
“I made the mistake of saying your name.”
I smiled. “Sounds personal.”
“It is now.”
His hand found mine like it belonged there.
The photographer got a few more shots before lowering the camera.
“I think I have everything I need.”
“That’s it?”
“That’s it.”
Naomi looked at me. “See? Famous.”
“Please stop saying that.”
“Never.”
The writer came over from the café, and we talked for another few minutes about when the article should run and anything else she might need from me.
Then the photographer looked around. “Before we go, do you want one with everybody? It won’t necessarily be for the article. Just while we’re here.”
Naomi was already moving.
“Yes.”
I laughed. “Of course you do.”
“Maya!”
A head appeared from behind the café counter. “What?”
“Come take a picture.”
“I’m working.”
“So am I.”
“That doesn’t even make sense.”
“Come on.”
Maya wiped her hands and came around the counter.
We gathered near the front of the store, Naomi on one side of me and Maya on the other. Mila squeezed herself between me and Naomi without asking anybody, and I laughed as I put my arm around her.
