“Touch me, and I’ll use it,” she warned.
“You know you can’t stay here alone,” he said.
“I’m not going anywhere with you,” she spat.
“He’s right.” Grimm’s voice came from the hallway. Grace lowered the gavel as he stepped into view. Rain glistened on his dark hair, and water ran down the hard planes of his face. His gun was still in his hand. There was blood on his knuckles, and she didn’t know if it belonged to him or someone else.
Her gaze swept over his chest, arms, and legs before she could stop herself. “I told you I’d come back,” he said.
“I wasn’t worried,” she insisted.
“You’re a bad liar.” The prospect took the gavel from her and quickly left the room. Grimm watched him go. “You threatened my prospect with office supplies?”
“It was the only weapon you left me,” she pointed out. He looked as if he almost smiled, but the expression vanished before it fully formed. “What happened outside?” she asked.
“The shots came from one of my men,” he said.
“Why?” she asked.
“The SUVs tried to force their way through the gate,” Grimm reported.
Grace’s stomach dropped. “Did they get in?”
“No,” Grimm said.
“Are they still out there?” she asked.
“For now,” he said.
“What do they want?” she asked.
Grimm closed the door behind him. “You,” he said simply.
“I gathered that,” she drawled.
“They claim you murdered a man at Blackwood Manor and stole private property belonging to Conrad Vale,” he said.
Grace stared at him. “I didn’t kill anyone,” she insisted.
“The blood on your dress says otherwise,” Grimm said.
“I tried to save him,” she explained.
“You didn’t tell me that part,” he said.
“Well, you didn’t ask,” she pointed out.
His eyes narrowed. “That game won’t work with me.”
“It isn’t a game,” she said. “This is my life now, apparently.”
“Then start talking,” he ordered.
Grace pressed her palms against the edge of the table. Her hands still bore faint reddish stains around her fingernails. “I was looking for Travis when I found the man. Someone had cut his throat. He gave me the flash drive before he died.”
“Did he say anything?” Grimm asked. She hesitated, and Grimm moved closer. “You promised no more secrets.”
“I didn’t promise anything. You gave an order, but that doesn’t mean that I have to follow it,” she spat.
