She stares at me like I’m an idiot.

Maybe I am.

“That life sucked.”

I almost laugh. “Lila.”

“No. You don’t get to decide my life was better before you.”

“It was simpler.”

“I was broke.”

“You won’t be.”

“I was alone.”

That shuts me up.

She picks up the papers. “I was working fourteen-hour days trying to keep the lodge open. Hank was drinking too much. The bank was threatening foreclosure. I went home every night to an empty apartment and ate cereal over the sink.”

“You’ll have money now.”

“Oh my God.”

She grabs the papers with both hands.

“What are you doing?”

She tears them in half.

I stare.

She tears them again.

“Lila.”

Again.

Then she drops the pieces onto the table.

I look at the pile.

“That was expensive.”

“Sue me.”

I shouldn’t smile but I do.

She points at me. “And stop smiling.”

“Hard not to.”

“You’re infuriating.”

“You just destroyed legal documents.”

“I’ll do it again.”
