“It’s on the table.”
She walks over and picks up the papers. She reads the first page. Then the second.
Her expression changes. “What is this?”
“You can read.”
“Dane.”
“Divorce papers.”
Her head snaps up. “You’re divorcing me?”
“I’m releasing you from the contract early.”
“I can see that.”
“Everything’s handled.”
“What does that mean?”
“The hundred grand is yours. Remaining balance transferred this morning. Lodge financing is approved.”
She stares at me. “Lodge financing?”
“Enough to cover the mortgage, repairs, operating expenses, and cancellations until spring.”
Her mouth falls open. “I didn’t apply for financing.”
“I did.”
“You applied for financing for my business?”
“Structured it through Miller Timber.”
Her face goes blank.
That’s worse than yelling.
I keep going anyway. “You won’t owe anything personally. Interest is covered. Rick drew it up so the lodge stays completely yours.”
“Of course he did.”
“Lila.”
“Dane.”
“People are canceling because of me.”
“People are canceling because Brody is an asshole.”
“Doesn’t matter.”
“It matters to me.”
“My conviction’s all over town again. Brody’s talking to the sheriff. Every day you’re married to me gives people another reason to drag you into my shit.”
“Our shit.”
