Dane looks down at his bandaged hand.
“That’s why people call me Killer Miller.” His voice is flat, like he doesn’t care.
But now I know him well enough to know exactly what that means.
He cares too much.
“Look at me.”
“No.”
“Dane.”
He reaches for his jacket. “I’ll still pay you.”
I blink. “What?”
“The hundred grand.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Contract stays the same financially. You don’t lose anything.”
Understanding hits me. And then I get furious. “You think I’m leaving.” He says nothing.
“Dane.”
“Wouldn’t blame you.”
I step in front of him. He moves sideways but I move with him.
“Stop.”
“You stop.”
“Lila.”
“No. You don’t get to decide I’m leaving, arrange my finances, and shove me out the door before I’ve said a word.”
His jaw tightens. “You saw me today.”
“I did.”
“You should’ve been scared.”
“I was.”
That stops him.
I step closer. “I was scared you were going to ruin your life over that asshole.” His eyes meet mine. “Not of you.”
“You don’t know what I’m capable of.”
“Yes, I do.”
“No, you don’t.”
“I know you stopped.”
