“He asked whether Emily had seemed afraid. He asked about the hairbrush and the polish.”
“Daniel knew?”
“He said the police found Emily wearing a blue dress.”
Judy leaned forward.
“What blue dress?”
“I don’t know. It wasn’t hers.”
“How do you know?”
“We shared a cabin. I had seen all her clothes.”
The room became silent again.
Judy’s face revealed nothing.
But I understood.
The Keeper dressed his victims.
Emily had disappeared in jeans and a red sweatshirt.
She was found in a blue dress that didn’t belong to her.
“Did Daniel tell you anything else?” Judy asked.
“He said Emily didn’t drown.”
“Why?”
“Because she was terrified of deep water. She would never get in the water.”
Judy switched off the recorder.
Trigger looked at her.
“That’s it?”
“For now.”
“You believe Emily was the Keeper’s first victim. That is a creepy name.”
“Yes, I believe she was. The name is creepy.”
The answer was quiet.
Certain.
Rylie looked down at Max.
The dog remained pressed against her leg.
Trigger stared at him.
Something changed in his face.
