Rylie approached the bar slowly.

“Mace.”

“What?”

“Did you know Judy Langley in Washington?”

I looked at her.

“How do you know she’s from Washington?”

“We were roommates for a semester. We talked.”

“Apparently.”

Her eyes widened.

“Oh my God.”

Trigger stepped between us.

“What?”

Rylie pointed at me.

“He’s Mason.”

The tavern could have been on fire and fewer people would have turned toward us.

Trigger looked at me.

Then at his wife.

Then at me again.

“What does that mean?”

“Judy dated a boy named Mason before he left for college.”

“We went out a few times,” I said.

Rylie ignored me.

“She mentioned him.”

“A few times,” I repeated.

Trigger placed both hands on the bar.

“Why have I never heard this story?”

“Because it wasn’t a story.”
