Sophie suddenly giggles.
Every man in the room looks toward her.
She's lying on the floor now with her head against Buddy's side.
Buddy is on his back with all four feet in the air while Sophie rubs his belly.
“Mommy, he snores.”
Claire's face changes.
For one beautiful second, she's not a widow.
She's not a woman who climbed through a window with men hunting her.
She's Sophie's mother.
She smiles.
A real smile.
And something in my chest moves.
I immediately shut it down.
Nathan.
This is Nathan's wife.
My best friend's wife.
My job is to keep her alive.

Doc comes down the stairs holding a small cardboard box.
He puts it on the table.
“I keep old letters and crap in here.”
Havoc looks offended.
“Sentimental.”
“Shut up.”
Doc digs through the box.
Receipts.
