“Describe him.”
“Tall. Maybe six feet. Baseball cap. Dark jacket.”
“Hair?”
“Couldn't see it.”
“Face?”
“Not well.”
“Race?”
“White.”
“Age?”
“Maybe thirty-five to forty-five. I don't know. It was dark and I was trying not to get caught.”
“You did fine.”
She blinks.
I mean it.
Claire got herself and her daughter out of a house with at least two men searching for them.
No training.
No backup.
No weapon that I know of.
She did exactly what mattered.
She survived.
“What happened next?”
“I ran upstairs.”
“You went toward Sophie.”
“Of course I went toward Sophie.”
“You didn't yell?”
“No.”
Good.
Nathan taught her something.
“I went into her room, woke her up, and told her we were playing the quiet game.”
Something tightens inside my chest.
“What quiet game?” Wolf asks.
