Cole had looked at me and said, Run while you still can.
I didn't.
Best decision I ever made.
Until the day somebody knocked on my door and told me Nathan wasn't coming home.
I pull out a chair and sit because Cole is right.
I am swaying.
Sophie climbs onto the chair beside me.
“Come here.”
She crawls into my lap.
She's getting too big for it, but I don't care.
I wrap both arms around her.
Cole sits across from us.
The envelope lies on the table between us.
I stare at Nathan's handwriting.
COLE BARRETT.
“You really never opened it?” he asks.
“No.”
“Not after Nathan died?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because he told me not to unless I needed it.”
Cole looks at me like he doesn't understand.
“He was my husband, Cole. He asked me to do one thing. I did it.”
His jaw tightens.
I immediately regret the sharpness in my voice.
But I'm tired.
I'm scared.
And I'm angry.
At whoever came into my house.
At Nathan for leaving behind secrets.
