“He wants an attorney.”
“Of course he does.”
“We found his rental car two blocks from Elizabeth’s house. The back seat contained the restraints and sedatives.”
My stomach tightened.
“He intended to take her.”
“Looks that way.”
“Evidence tying him to the Dallas murders?”
“Not yet.”
“There will be.”
Avery studied me.
“You’re confident.”
“He was my captain.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
“It is when you know how much information he had.”
She nodded slowly.
“We seized his phone. Federal investigators are obtaining warrants for his financial accounts and department records.”
“Good.”
“He may have been monitoring your case for years.”
“I know.”
Saying it hurt more than I expected.
Every murder board.
Every report.
Every time I had walked into his office and admitted I was stuck.
Robert had listened.
Then, Evan was warned.
Mace moved closer.
His presence steadied me.
A nurse approached.
“Detective Langley?”
“Yes?”
