Max hit him from behind.
The dog clamped onto his forearm and dragged him to the pavement.
The knife skidded across the rain-slick concrete.
Evan screamed and struck Max with his free hand.
I drove my shoulder into his chest.
We hit the ground hard.
He fought like a man who knew there would be no second chance.
I trapped his injured arm beneath my knee.
Trigger reached Rylie.
He pulled her against him.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“Are you sure?”
“I’m sure.”
His hands moved over her face, her shoulders, her arms.
She caught his face between her palms.
“I’m okay.”
Trigger kissed her.
Not carefully.
Not quietly.
Like he had almost lost her.
Judy kicked the knife away and crouched beside Evan.
Rain ran down her face.
“You’re under arrest for the murders of Cynthia James, Melissa Grant, Nicole Sanders, Paula Greene, Allison Crowe, Rebecca Lane, and Marissa Cole.”
Evan glared up at her.
“They should’ve forgotten.”
“They trusted the wrong family.”
“They knew what happened.”
“Exactly.”
His breathing came hard.
