Agnes placed the pie in Carson’s hands.
“For the sheriff.”
Carson looked down at it. “What kind?”
“Peach.”
“I like peach.”
“It isn’t for you.”
Mabel patted his arm. “You look hungry. We’ll bring you another.”
“I’m always hungry.”
“I can tell.”
Carson smiled.
The traitor.
June studied me.
“Have you been to Eagle River before?”
“Once. A long time ago.”
“Visiting someone?”
“A college friend.”
“Who?”
“I don’t think that’s relevant.”
The three women exchanged a look.
Everything was relevant to them.
Agnes smiled.
“We’ll find out.”
They returned to their car.
Carson watched them drive away.
“I like this town.”
“They threatened to investigate me.”
“They gave me pie.”
