“Tell your Ranger to stop moving.”

“I’m not his commander.”

Robert lifted his weapon.

Max lunged forward one step.

Robert swung the barrel toward him.

“Don’t,” I warned.

“You care about the dog too?”

“I care about what happens to you after you shoot him.”

For the first time, Robert looked uncertain.

A radio crackled somewhere behind him.

Wolf’s voice.

“Mace, report.”

Robert fired.

Mace knocked me sideways as the bullet struck the concrete support.

Max launched.

Robert fired again.

The second bullet went wide as Max hit him in the chest.

They crashed into the rushing water.

Robert’s gun skidded across the concrete.

Mace reached him first.

He drove Robert onto his stomach and twisted one arm behind his back.

Robert fought wildly.

The calm captain disappeared.
