I placed the call on speaker.
Lieutenant Avery continued.
“The front window was broken.”
“There was blood in the living room.”
“How much?” I asked.
“Not enough to indicate a fatal injury.”
Relief tried to rise.
I didn’t let it.
“Signs of a struggle?”
“Yes.”
“Did you find a body?”
“No.”
“Any suspects?”
“Gone before patrol arrived.”
Wolf leaned closer.
“Vehicles?”
“One neighbor reported seeing a dark sedan leave the area.”
“Plate?”
“None.”
“Direction?”
“South.”
I closed my eyes.
Evan had escaped.
But maybe Elizabeth had too.
“Did you search the backyard?”
“Yes.”
“There’s a damaged section of fence and blood on the wood.”
Mace looked at Max.
“She climbed out.”
Lieutenant Avery heard him.
