Doris stepped closer.
“No.”
“It belongs to whoever betrayed that badge.”
Tate looked at her.
She didn’t flinch.
“You can carry guilt after we catch him.”
Mabel nodded.
“That’s what we’ve been telling you.”
Nobody argued with the Magnolia Ladies.
Not even the sheriff.
Judy lifted the brass key.
A small metal tag hung from the ring.
Three letters had been stamped into it.
S.D.B.
The deputy leaned closer.
“Safe-deposit box?”
“That’s what I’m thinking.”
Sheriff Tate turned the key over.
“No bank name.”
Doris smiled slowly.
“I know which bank.”
Every person in the room looked at her.
“The Eagle River Savings and Deposit Bank.”
Wolf frowned.
“That closed before we moved here.”
“Fifteen years ago,” Doris said.
“It stood on the corner before the county bought the building.”
The deputy snapped his fingers.
“The records annex.”
Sheriff Tate’s eyes widened.
