Trigger looked down at her.

"You never told me that."

"I forgot."

She swallowed hard.

"I forgot everything."

The guilt in her voice settled over the room.

"You were seventeen," I reminded her.

"You weren't responsible for what happened."

"I could have helped her."

"You didn't know she needed help."

"I should have."

"No."

My voice came out sharper than I intended.

Everyone looked at me.

"I've spent eighteen years looking at murder scenes," I continued quietly.

"If guilt could change the past, none of my victims would still be dead."

Mace looked at me from across the room.

"What happened when you followed Emily?" I asked.

Rylie opened her eyes.

"It was raining."

"The same storm?"

"Yes."

"I stayed far enough behind that she wouldn't see me."

"Where did she go?"

"Cabin Nine."

Every Ranger went still.
