Then back at me.

“Do not,” I warned.

“I didn’t say anything.”

“You were about to.”

“I was thinking it.”

“That’s worse.”

Mace smiled.

Wolf looked between us. “I’ve heard that somewhere.”

“You’re all children,” I said.

Carson’s expression became serious. “There’s something else.”

“What?”

“Robert called.”

My hand tightened around the evidence bag.

“Did you answer?”

“No. You told me not to discuss anything near the tavern until Saint finished searching for bugs. We’re at the camp, but I thought the same rule applied.”

“It does. What did he leave?”

“A voicemail.”

“Play it.”

Carson opened his phone and selected the message.

Robert Mills’s voice came through the speaker.

“Langley, I don’t know what you think you’re doing, but you need to contact me immediately. The department has revoked your access to the Keeper files until your medical status is reviewed. You are not authorized to collect evidence, question witnesses, or represent the Dallas Police Department. Return to Dallas before this gets worse.”

The message ended.

Mace’s face became very still.

Wolf muttered something I couldn’t hear.

Carson watched me carefully. “He locked us out of the case database.”

“When?”

“Twenty-two minutes ago.”

That was when we found Emily’s letter.

“When did you last access it?”

“Before we entered the office. Everything worked.”
