“He poured an accelerant,” Judy said.

The flames spread toward the trees.

Toward the only trail leading around the water.

“He’s cutting us off,” Havoc said.

Trigger’s voice burst through the radio. “The office is on fire!”

I looked back.

Orange flames climbed one wall of the camp office.

Rylie and Trigger were still inside.

Judy surged to her feet.

I caught her hand.

“Let go.”

“He’s shooting from across the lake.”

“Emily’s letter is in there.”

“So are Trigger and Rylie.”

As if I needed another reason.

Wolf pointed toward the cabins. “Havoc and I will cover you. Go!”

I released Max. “Rylie!”

He raced through the trees.

Judy and I followed.

Smoke rolled from the broken windows when we reached the clearing. Trigger came through the front door with one arm around Rylie. She clutched Emily’s letter and the photograph against her chest.

“Everyone out!” Trigger shouted.

“We have the evidence,” Rylie coughed.

Max circled them before turning back toward the building.

“Max, no!” I yelled.

He stopped at the doorway but barked into the smoke.

Someone was inside.

I heard a crash from the back of the office.

Trigger helped Rylie over to Judy. “Stay with her.”

Then he ran toward the rear of the building.

I followed.
