I looked out the window and saw a black truck.

“Wolf, do you see that?”

Wolf’s voice came through my earpiece.

“I see it.”

Sheriff Tate reached for his radio.

The black pickup accelerated.

Two sheriff’s vehicles pulled away from opposite ends of Main Street.

Their lights came on.

The truck shot through the intersection and headed toward the river road.

I looked at Trigger.

He was already moving.

The watch was over.

The hunt had begun.

The black truck disappeared around the corner before I reached the front door.

Sheriff Tate’s vehicle shot through the intersection with its lights flashing. The second deputy followed close behind him.

Mace grabbed my arm before I could run into the street.

“Where are you going?”

“With them.”

“Will has your vehicle.”

He pulled a set of keys from his pocket.

“That was already his plan.”

We ran toward his truck.

Behind us, Trigger came through the tavern door with Wolf at his side.

“I’m going,” Trigger said.

“No, you’re not,” Wolf answered.

“That truck was watching my wife.”

“Which means it may be trying to pull you away from her.”

Trigger stopped.
