Page 100 of Rangers Unexpected Return

“With whom?”

“You.”

The answer caught me off guard.

“Wolf assigned you to watch me?”

“No.”

“Then why are you here?”

He looked toward the staircase.

“Because Max is with Rylie.”

“That doesn’t answer my question.”

“It answers enough of it.”

Before I could respond, Max growled upstairs.

Mace set down his cup.

The entire tavern came alive.

Chairs scraped across the floor.

Boots struck the stairs.

Wolf appeared from the hallway with his weapon drawn.

Trigger shouted Rylie’s name.

Mace reached the second floor before I cleared the bar.

I followed him.

Max stood at the end of the hallway.

His body was rigid.

His teeth showed.

Rylie remained inside the bedroom with Trigger.

“Where?” Mace whispered.

Max stared toward the window at the end of the hall.

Mace approached slowly.

The window was open.

Curtains moved in the night air.

Wolf checked the lock.

“Someone forced it.”
