“There is one other change.”
Naturally.
“Owen has agreed to oversee the department.”
“Owen?”
“Yes.”
“Temporarily?”
“For now.”
Yesterday, this information would have qualified as a crisis.
Today, it barely makes the list.
“That’s going to be fun.”
The partner does not ask whether I mean it.
“He’s very good at what he does,” he says.
“I know.”
Unfortunately.
He stands. I follow.
The conference-room door opens onto the same hallway I walked down after being fired.
Owen catches up with me.
“I owe you an apology.”
I keep walking. “For?”
He falls into step beside me.
I half expect him to say the engagement, but that apology hasn’t occurred to him yet.
“For Reid. I should have believed you.”
“Don’t worry about it. It’s water under the bridge.”
His shoulders ease slightly as we slow near my office. “Congratulations on making partner.”
“Thanks.”
Celeste’s office door is closed. The lights are off.
I stop.
“Where’s Celeste?”
The senior partner answers from behind us.
“She won’t be in today.”
