We’re both thinking the same thing...

One bed for both of us.

“I know what’s meant to happen,” I whisper.

“Does it even need saying?” Baptiste rumbles back.

“We’re here, it’s the ancient Castaways tradition, and we have to...”

“You don’t have to do a thing, Sylvie.”

“Yes, I do.”

“No, you don’t.”

“But they’ll know,” I say. “It’s the ritual. It’s public. You want to be part of Castaways society? This is how things are done. Don’t you remember the Code? They are always watching.”

Baptiste laughs.

“Yes, they always are.”

“And would you lie to them?” I ask him.

“No.”

“Would you lie if an Elder questioned you if you consummated the marriage?”

“No,” Baptiste replies firmly. “Never.”

Now I laugh.

“You’re a Castaways lapdog, Baptiste. You’re bending over backward to let them have their way with you. You won’t even lie to save your dignity.”

My husband grimaces.

“You don’t understand what is required of me,” Baptiste says. “How could you?”

“Oh, I do understand,” I reply, shaking my head. “More than you, Baptiste. I might not be a member of this boys’ club, but I was raised in it. I had to get married to it. I had no choice. I know this Order more than most of its members.”

“Don’t get so high and mighty, Highness.”

“Yes, I can. Because I can see through all of it. You’re just another arrogant Castaways boy. You don’t care. I bet you even said your wedding vows with your fingers crossed behind your back, just like the rest of them. Ready to run away and hurt me at the first chance.”

Baptiste takes a step forward, closing the distance between us. I feel the heat from his sweat... the ink of my name glistening on his chest... the dried blood around the letters. It’s like I’m a brand on him.

I hate how much it turns me on.

“Let me make this clear,” he growls, “I am not like them.”

“Why should I believe you?”

“Do I need to keep repeating myself? I will protect you with everything I have. I swear.”

“Why?” I ask, my wavering voice betraying my thoughts. “Why would you do that?”

“Because now you have my name,” Baptiste replies with all the seriousness in the world.

“Is that the only reason why you’ll touch me now?” I probe. “You’re not even going to enjoy it?”
