Rolling to one side, I fluff up the pillow, trying to get comfortable on the surprisingly soft mattress. After the wild night I just experienced, my body is exhausted. My mind is exhausted.
But for some reason, I’m struggling to fall asleep.
I turn again, rotating to the opposite side. Squeezing my eyes shut, I attempt to will myself into drifting off. But the harder I try, the farther away sleep seems to drift.
And the farther sleep gets, the more antsy and restless I feel.
Until I can’t freaking stand it anymore.
Sliding out of bed, I quietly tiptoe to the door, silently cracking it open. I’m surprised to see Owen stretched out on the couch, one hand braced behind his head. His eyes are closed and his breathing is steady and even.
I guess I’m the only one who can’t fall asleep.
With a sigh, I turn, resigned to a long night of tossing and turning.
“You’re allowed to come out here.” Owen’s eyes open, his head tilting my direction. “It is your brother’s cabin, after all.”
There really isn’t any point in me going out there. It’s not like there’s a television to watch, or even a radio to listen to.
My feet carry me there anyway. Softly stepping across the floor toward where he lays. “I can’t sleep.”
“That’s not surprising.” He slowly rises into a sitting position, swinging his feet over the side to rest on the floor. “It was a pretty crazy night. Your body is probably still caught in fight or flight.”
“I don’t feel like I’m caught in flight or fight.” I tuck the robe tighter around me as I go to sit on the sofa, leaving some space between us. The cushion beneath my ass is still warm from his body heat, and a flutter of awareness tickles through parts of me I do my best to ignore. “I feel like I’m going to fall over, but when I try to sleep, it just doesn’t happen.”
“That can be frustrating.” Owen stands, going to the linen closet where I found my towel and this robe. He pulls out a plush blanket. The fluffy, pale blue pile is soft and cozy.
And very familiar.
“I bought that for Tony’s living room.” I snort, shaking my head. “I wondered where it went.”
Owen shakes it out, tucking it around me. “Now you know.”
“Thank you.” I pull it a little closer, eyes moving around the sparse space. “If I’d known I was going to end up here eventually, I probably would’ve bought him a lot more stuff.” My eyes drop down to my hidden body. “Like pajamas.”
“That’s probably part of the reason you can’t sleep.” Owen gestures at the robe peeking out from beneath the blanket. “You’re getting all tangled up in that thing.” He checks his watch. “Actually, our clothes might be dry.” He leaves me where I sit, warm and snuggly, to go into the utility room and check on our laundry then comes back with a smile and an armload of warm fabric. “Good news.”
“Not really. I don’t think sleeping in my jeans is going to be any more comfortable.” It figures, the one day I don’t wear leggings is the one day they would’ve really come in handy.
“Take this then.” He shakes out the shirt he had on earlier, passing it to me.
I stare down at the warm pile of black cotton. “What about you? Won’t you be...” My eyes lift to where he stands, the sight of his chest stalling out my brain for a few seconds. “Naked?” What did I just say? Shit. “Cold. I mean cold.”
Owen’s lips quirk in a hint of a smile. “I’ll be fine.” He turns, showing me his back. “Put it on while it’s still warm. Maybe that will help you relax a little.”
My stomach does little flip at the thought of being naked-ish in the same vicinity of Owen being naked-ish. “Are you sure you don’t mind?”
“Not at all.” He takes a few steps forward, depositing the remainder of the clothing on the small table. “I tend to run hot anyway.”
He can freaking say that again. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen anyone as physically perfect as he is. I can practically trace the ridge and dip of every muscle in his body. It’s ridiculous. And very freaking distracting.
“Done?” His deep voice startles me because I was accidentally staring at him again.
“Just a minute.” I toss the blanket I bought Tony aside, and work the belt at my waist loose. Then the robe slips from my shoulders, bearing my upper half to the chilly air of the cabin. My breathing speeds, and my nipples pull tight, but I’m not sure it has anything to do with the temperature.
What would Owen do if he turned around right now? Would he appreciate my body the same way I’ve been appreciating his?
I look down, taking in my larger than average breasts, and the soft curve of my stretch mark decorated belly.
