“What do you mean?” Kordell asked.

“They both give back to their communities tenfold. I for one, really appreciate it.” She squeezed Dale’s shoulder. “For example, this guy is rich but doesn’t flaunt it. Lives in a modest condo here in town. Donates millions every year to worthy causes.”

“Aw, shucks. You’re embarrassing me, Effie. Totally fine with me if Maxwell comes. I’d love to chat with the CEO of CWS. Perhaps invest in your unit.”

Kordell didn’t miss the slight scowl on his father’s handsome face. Was he jealous? Dale had to be ten years younger than the pretty mayor. At least.

“Thank you for the invite, Effie,” his father said. “But I have a family meal planned. Maybe another time?”

Her smile didn’t reach her eyes, disappointment evident. “No worries. Maybe before you head back to Ontario?”

“I’d love that,” Maxwell said.

“I’ll call you. Let’s go, Dale.” Mayor Daniel sauntered toward the exit with the philanthropist following.

Their father put on his coat. “I’ll order in pizza and wings. See you at the lodge.” He left.

Kordell whistled. “I think Dad may have some competition.”

“Who, Dale? No, he’s engaged to a doctor at our hospital.” Aurora gestured toward her fellow officers. “I want to chat with the team before I head home.”

“I see Henry over there too, and the paramedics I met the other day.”

“Yes, the entire town came out. Those who could, of course. Many are shut-ins. See you at the station early tomorrow morning?”

“I don’t like you going home alone. I can wait for you.” Kordell waved hello to Henry.

“It’s okay. Garrett arranged for an escort from one of our constables. Seems my staff sergeant doesn’t want me going home alone either.”

“Good. I don’t like that SBK keeps targeting you.”

“Me neither.”

“I’ll grab Dawson to come with me since I’m going to the lodge to stay with them now.” He squeezed her hand. “There’s plenty of room. Bring Lady Grey with you.”

“Nah, I need some alone time. It’s the introvert in me. But thanks for the invite. See you tomorrow.” She smiled and headed over to her team.

Kordell kept his eyes on her as she spoke with her colleagues.

“She’s a cutie.” Dawson slapped him on the back.

Kordell jumped. “Bro, don’t do that. You scared me.”

“Hardly in stealth mode. Your focus was on your childhood crush, and you didn’t even hear me whistling.”

Wait, how did Dawson know? Kordell rarely spoke of his childhood, especially his time with the Roche family. “She’s just a friend.”

“The goggle-eyed look on your face says otherwise. You forget, I’m good at profiling.”

“Funny. Not happening. You remember what Erin did. I’ve sworn off women.”

Dawson rolled his eyes. “Aurora is not like Erin. I can already tell that.”

Time to change the subject. “You need a drive to the lodge?”

“Sure.”

Kordell lifted his jacket off the chair. “After supper, I’m gonna beat you at a game of checkers.”
