“Maybe,” he said. “Guess you’ll have to wait to find out.”
“Evil mate,” she said. “You know I have issues with delayed gratification.”
“Bullshit,” Kane said. “You love delayed gratification. Like when I lick your pussy slowly, until you’re just about to come, and then keep you crazy on the edge until you’re screaming my name…”
Rachelle could feel herself getting wet just hearing about it. “Dammit, Kane, if you’re going to talk dirty to me like that we’re not even going to make it to the waterfall.”
He stopped and put the basket down, pulling her to him. He held her in the circle of his arms, looking down at her. He was smiling, but his eyes were serious.
“I want to give you a beautiful evening to remember,” he said. “I suck at romance, but I want—I want to try to show you how much you mean to me.”
Her heart melted, like it always did when her tough, proud Enforcer showed his sweet, caring side. “All I ever want is your heart,” she said, putting her palm on his chest. “Whatever is in there, whatever you can show me. Always.”
He smiled and kissed her, long and slow. Then he picked up the basket and walked on, his hand curved possessively around hers.
When they reached the waterfall, Kane opened the basket. A soft blanket came out first, which he spread over the ground. Then two beach towels.
Rachelle looked into the basket. “I don’t see any bathing suits.”
Kane grinned at her. “No, you do not,” he said. “That’s one reason why this is a private picnic.”
Rachelle felt heat pooling between her legs. The idea of swimming naked with Kane—hell, of doing anything naked with Kane—made her hot just thinking about it.
Then he started pulling out food. There was barbecued chicken and all the fixings, plus Rachelle’s favorite wine.
“What else is in there?” she asked, reaching for the basket.
He grabbed her hand and kissed it. “No more peeking,” he said. “Delayed gratification, remember?”
Rachelle play-pouted. “That’s only worth it if I’m getting an orgasm at the end of it,” she said.
Kane just leaned back and smiled lazily at her. “Who says you’re not?”
Rachelle thought her panties were going to melt.
He stayed close while they ate—feeding her tidbits of food, kissing a smudge of barbecue sauce off her lips. It was so sweet and intimate, and yet incredibly, wildly hot.
Finally he got to dessert. Two insulated containers came out of the basket. One held ice cream—naturally.
The other held a small bottle of champagne.
“And you said you suck at romance,” she said. “What’s this for?”
Kane looked up at her, his face enigmatic. “You don’t think we have things to celebrate?” He ran his fingers slowly up her bare thigh, to the edge of her shorts. “Like finding the woman I’ve loved forever, and realizing I will love her until the end of time?”
This time she couldn’t blink back the tears. He rubbed them away gently with his thumb. “No crying,” he said. “There’s ice cream.”
Kane peeled off the top of the container and grabbed a spoon. “Come here,” he said, his voice low and gravelly. Rachelle moved over and leaned against his legs while he fed her slow spoonfuls of ice cream. He was messy about it, letting drips fall on the tops of her breasts so he could lick them off. Rachelle tipped her head back, loving the slow heat building inside her at the feel of his mouth on her skin.
“Another bite,” he said. She took the spoonful slowly, drawing it into her mouth and then out, still half-full of ice cream.
There was something hard and lumpy on the spoon.
Rachelle picked it up and rubbed it off with her napkin. Kane watched her.
It was a gold ring. The top was flat and round—a yin-yang symbol, with a tiny sparkling diamond in the center of each half. The sides of the band were engraved with two feathered wings. Just like the gold coin.
Not angels’ wings.
