They walked him inside the building. It still looked like a barn from the outside, but the inside had been completely redone. They walked down a blank hallway to a room halfway down. The guards put Kane inside and then took up posts on either side of the door.

He waited for ten long, excruciating minutes. Then the door opened and Selina walked in, two more guards flanking her. One was Noah Reilly. He looked at Kane and his lip lifted in a silent snarl.

Fuck.

Selina was dressed casually, but still carefully, flattering her assets. Her hair was done up and she wore makeup, though it was subtle. And she was wearing a fruity vanilla scent that went straight to Kane’s crotch.

He felt part of himself yearning toward her, that old feeling coming back. Shit.

Wolf growled. Shh, Kane told him. We have to play along. It’s for Raven.

Selina walked up to him and stopped inches away, where he could feel the heat of her, smell her pheromones, smell her arousal. And something else, something faintly vulnerable.

She cared what he thought of her, he realized in shock. After all this time, it mattered to her.

She reached up and cupped his face with her hands, and then pressed her lips to his.

His brain lit up like a Christmas tree. Love, longing, loneliness, lust, all the feelings he’d locked away washed over him. She filled his senses, and her warm lips moving on his made him want to crush her to him and taste her.

He curved his arms around her and she pressed herself to him, her breasts warm and soft. In the back of his mind, the knowledge of his mission flared, but it was overwhelmed.

He felt rather than heard the growls of the rest of the guards, the scent of male arousal and anger filling the air. Fuck it, she was still sleeping with all of them. Like they were her pack, and she was some kind of alpha queen.

She ran her tongue over Kane’s lips and sighed. He could feel a boner pressing against the front of his jeans. “Oh, Hunter,” she said. “I’m so glad you’ve finally come home.”

She seized his hand and pulled him out of the room. “Come on,” she said. “I have something to show you.

Kane went with her. The guards followed, those subvocal growls still rumbling through him.

He hoped Selina’s hold over them was strong enough to keep them from all attacking at the same time. He could probably take them, but it would be close.

Especially since they had guns.

His mind was beginning to clear again, now that he was thinking in terms of the mission. He could still smell Selina, still feel his pheromones lighting up his brain.

He was supposed to do something. What was it?

His pocket. He stuck his hand in his pocket and felt the heavy weight of a gold coin. Rachelle’s coin. The mere touch of it cleared his mind further. He could almost feel her, feel their connection. He pictured the neural pathways that Selina triggered as lighted hallways, and focused on shutting down the lights.

Selina turned to him. “Don’t shut me out, Hunter,” she said. “I’ll be displeased. It will make your punishment worse.”

He knew that was what she was hoping for. The more punishment, the more she got off on it. So he focused on Raven. Her touch, her scent, the feel of her.

Protect her, Wolf agreed. Kill the bad one.

They came to a heavy metal door at the end of the hall, almost like a vault door. Selina punched in a combination and pushed it open, pulling Kane along with her.

The guards tried to come in too, but she shook her head. “Shh,” she said, putting a finger to her lips. “This is private. You boys can stay out here.”

She shut the door without quite latching it, and then walked Kane inside.

It was a lab. Exam tables, dissecting tables, tubes and instruments and computers. The lofted ceiling was two stories high, and there were no windows at ground level, just around the top. Hard as fucking hell to get out of, or into.

This was going to be a problem.

The other problem was that Rachelle was standing in a cage across the room.

All thoughts of Selina fled his mind, except threat assessment. It was all he could do not to run over there and make sure Rachelle was okay.
