He hated saying what she wanted him to say. It made him feel nauseated, but he had to convince her she still had power over him.

“I like it when you punish me,” he ground out.

“Good boy,” she crooned. Like he was a fucking dog.

Wolf growled. She doesn’t respect us, he said. Raven respects us.

Yes, she does. Kane said. And we’re going to go get her back.

“I need you to come to me, Hunter,” Selina said. “There’s a little matter I’m going to need you to take care of.”

His stomach twisted. Please let her say she hadn’t hurt Raven. But he couldn’t ask. If he said he didn’t want her to hurt Rachelle, she’d do it just to torment him.

“What is it?” he asked.

“I have your little girlfriend,” she said. “You shouldn’t have let her touch you, Hunter. You know you’re mine.”

“I’m sorry,” he said. “I know it was wrong.” It wasn’t wrong. It was the most right thing he’d ever done, being with Rachelle. He took a deep breath and managed, “I was so lonely without you.”

Because of what you did to me. I couldn’t be with anyone else. Until Rachelle.

“I’ll let you make it up to me,” she promised. “You can come here, and you can kill her for me.”

Kane wanted to reach through the cell phone, wrap his hands around her neck, and watch the life seep out of her as he strangled her.

“Hunter?”

He had to say something. She was offering directions to her hideout, for God’s sake. Exactly what they’d been hoping for.

“I’ll do anything for you,” he said. No. For Raven. “Tell me where to come.”

She gave him directions. Then she added, “And make sure you come alone. If you bring anyone with you—or even tell anyone about this—then I’m afraid I’m going to have to kill her myself. And what fun would that be?”

She hung up.

Kane sat, squeezing his phone in his hand until the screen started to crack. He released it; he needed it in case Selina tried to call again.

He didn’t care if she was a woman. Selina was pure evil, and if she harmed Rachelle, he’d kill her with his bare hands and sleep like a baby afterward.

Wolf was growling. I wanted to do that before, he said.

I know, buddy. Should have let you. Sorry.

Wolf curled up inside him, satisfied. Let’s go do it now. Protect Raven.

Right there with you. But we need a couple of things first.

We have teeth and claws. What else do we need?

Kane smiled grimly. We’ll just take a few more things, in case we need them.

Kane knew he couldn’t risk going up to the weapons shed. People would see him, and they’d know what he was doing.

And he had to do this alone. It was his responsibility—always had been. He couldn’t bring the fallout down on the pack.

Unfortunately, he’d purposely situated the weapons shed so it was in plain view from most of the main compound, pretty much impossible to get to without being seen. The pack trusted each other—had to—but eventually there would be cubs, visitors, possibly hostile envoys from other packs.

Basic security saved lives.
