Kane still couldn’t figure out what his deal was. He and the woman had gotten away clean—and they had to know they’d been caught on surveillance. So why wouldn’t he just run?

Why stay behind, and try to pretend he didn’t know anything about it?

The whole thing just didn’t add up.

He turned to the techs who were going through the security footage. “What have you got for me?” he asked. “How did they get in? What exit did they leave from? Do we have anything on the parking lot footage?”

The tech shook his head in frustration.

“There’s nothing,” he said. “I have Noah going outside to start his perimeter check. After that, neither of them shows up on any security surveillance except the camera in the vault room. Either they teleported into the damn vault room and back out again, or they tampered with the security system somehow. But then, why allow themselves to be caught on video in the vault room? This whole thing is screwy.”

He glanced through the window at Noah, who was starting to get agitated. He’d been sitting quietly, but now he was rhythmically yanking on his cuffs, making an annoying clanking sound that was grating on Kane’s nerves.

“Kane!” Noah shouted, face turned toward the observation window. “I know you’re in there. I need a phone call. I’m supposed to get a phone call.”

That was bullshit. There were no lawyers and phone calls for shifter contractors. The Council would deal with him and he’d get a shifter advisor who knew shifter law. Until then he was in Kane’s charge, as the Council’s representative Enforcer.

Noah kept pulling on his chains, the metal clanging against the table leg. Bang. Bang. Bang.

Kane didn’t like the looks of this. If Noah freaked and changed, he could damage himself and anyone else in the room.

And why the fuck was a Marine trained in black ops losing it? Or was he just faking it?

Kane turned to the techs. “Get me a copy of the vault room footage,” he said. “Put it on a laptop. And get someone to contact one of the healers and get a sedative prepared. I can’t have him freaking out in there.”

“Yes, sir.”

One of them got on the phone to hunt down a healer. The other started transferring the video footage to a laptop.

“And when you’re done with the transfer, see if you can get a clear shot of the woman’s face, or any identifying characteristics. There’s something about her that’s familiar—she may work here, or she may be a contractor or visitor. I want to see if there’s any way we can track down her identity.”

“Okay.” The tech muttered something about not being a miracle worker, but Kane ignored him. He was missing something here. They all were.

The tech finished downloading the files and shoved the computer across the desk at Kane. “There you go,” he said.

Kane picked up the laptop, and the tech went back to his work, still muttering.

Damn. He was sucking at the people thing again. Somehow when Wolf wasn’t growling all the time, he felt worse about being rude to people.

“Thanks,” he said. The tech looked up in surprise. “I know there’s not much to work with, but whatever you can get might help.”

“Uh, okay,” the tech said, looking happier. “I’ll do my best.”

He didn’t have to look so shocked. Kane thanked people. Sometimes.

Kane took the laptop into the conference room.

Noah was still yanking on his chains, but the speed had picked up. When he raised his face to Kane’s, his eyes looked wild, and they were more than half gold.

“How long are you going to keep me chained up here like a fucking dog?” Noah said. “I didn’t do anything. All I did was my job.”

“Really,” Kane said. He perched one hip on the table next to Noah and put the laptop down in front of him. “Then how do you explain this?”

He tapped the screen and the video began playing. Kane watched Noah’s face. His mouth was hanging open in shock.

He turned to Kane. “That’s not me.”

Kane rolled his eyes. “Seriously?” he asked. “That’s the best you’ve got? Of course it’s fucking you. Face, hair, neck tattoo—are you really expecting me to believe it’s some kind of evil twin?”
