Chapter 13
Afterwards they lay spent, not talking. Kane held Rachelle wrapped in his arms, her head pillowed on his chest. He couldn’t seem to stop touching her—stroking her shoulder, caressing her hair, tracing her ribcage or the curve of her breast with wondering fingers.
And listening to Wolf’s contented silence. It was stunning, to lie still with a woman in his arms, and not be fighting Wolf’s rage and unhappiness.
Maybe it was Rachelle that Wolf had wanted all along.
That was a terrifying thought. Because that wasn’t as simple as one night in her bed.
Tonight, for the first time since he was a kid, Kane had been following his feelings, acting in the moment without thinking about what came next.
Things never went well for him when he didn’t think.
He had to stay on top of things, or it would all go to hell. Like Sophia and the Nashville pack. Like losing Rachelle in the first place.
Like Selina.
He had to figure out what this all meant. What if Rachelle really didn’t feel what he felt? What if she’d just been fulfilling her teenage crush? What if her effect on Wolf didn’t mean anything? What if it did? What if they were supposed to be mates? Could he even have a bond with someone other than Selina?
Did he want a mate? Did Rachelle? Or was this just a pity fuck?
The more he tried to use his mind, the more confused he got.
This—whatever was between them—was never going to work. It was too complicated. He had to tell her it was never going to work.
Wolf woke up and whined.
Shit. Wolf wanted to stay with her. Okay, then, asshole, he said to Wolf. You figure out what I should say to her next. Because I have a feeling it’s going to involve me turning into a girl and starting the famous “where is this relationship going?” conversation.
Wolf said, Tell her she belongs to us.
What if we can’t make her happy? What if we suck at this?
Wolf had no answer to that one.
Yeah.
Kane was saved from having to think of words by an alert tone from his phone. It was the special alert Jesse had set up on the casino’s security system.
He untangled himself gently from Rachelle, who complained sleepily. Dropping a quick kiss on her temple, he found his tangled jeans by the foot of the bed and dug his phone out of the pocket.
He tapped the icon to open Jesse’s app, and then keyed into the rerouted security feeds from the casino.
The system had picked up an anomaly in the manager’s office. Tapping on the feed, he saw Mr. Owen, the resort manager, slumped forward over his desk. The door leading to the vault area was open.
No other alarms were sounding.
How the hell could this be happening? And why wasn’t security responding? Where the fuck were the guards?
He switched to the vault room camera feed. The vault door was open and the two guards were lying on the floor, unmoving. A woman in a maid’s uniform, her back to the camera, was dumping bundles of cash into one of those carts used to transport dirty linens to the laundry. As Kane watched, a man came out of the vault with another load of cash.
Noah.
What the actual fuck?
Then the woman grabbed Noah around the back of the neck and kissed him, rubbing up against him like she wanted to jump his boner right there.
The girlfriend. Noah Reilly was the inside man, and whatever woman he’d gotten mixed up with was part of the robbery gang. Maybe the leader.
