It went to voice mail. What the hell?
He was staring at the phone, getting ready to call the security station, when it started vibrating. It was Noah.
“Kane here,” he said. “Where were you?”
“On another call, sir. Checking in with the security station. Sorry about that. Is everything all right?”
“That’s what I called to ask you,” he said.
Noah sounded breathless, as if he’d been running. Kane wasn’t sure he believed the story about the other call, but the guy might have just been taking a leak.
On the other hand, he might have been on a smoke break or banging a cocktail waitress in the supply room, or any number of things he shouldn’t have been doing.
Noah said, “Everything’s quiet, sir.”
“Good. Let’s keep it that way. Stay sharp.”
“Yes sir.”
Kane ended the call. Reilly had been out of position the other night, and now this. Kane’s instincts were telling him something was off. Tomorrow he was going to start checking up on exactly what Noah Reilly was doing during his shifts.
He pulled up in front of Rachelle’s house and stopped the truck. She woke up and stretched.
“Sorry,” she said. “I can’t believe I fell asleep. I’m usually up late.”
Kane said, “My pack probably wore you out. They exhaust me all the time.”
Rachel smiled a little, but she wasn’t looking at him. She was looking down, biting her lip.
Was he supposed to do something? What? He wished he understood this dating thing.
“So…” she said. “Thank you. I had a really nice time on our date.”
“So this was a date?” he said. Fuck. He was making an idiot out of himself again.
She paused. “Well, I let you fondle my boobs, which I wouldn’t normally do if it wasn’t a date.”
“So you let all your dates fondle your boobs?” He didn’t like that idea. Neither did Wolf.
She sighed. “Sheesh, Kane. Are you going to walk me to the door or not?”
Shit. “Am I supposed to?”
She glanced sideways. “As your dating coach, I highly recommend it. Women love that gentlemanly stuff.”
He went around and opened her door for her, and walked her up to the porch. Rachelle unlocked the door and turned to face him. “Dating tip #3: this is the part when you’re supposed to kiss me goodnight.”
Damn. If he kissed her, it was all over. He wanted her so bad, but he didn’t know if Wolf could handle it. Hell, he didn’t know if he could handle it. Every time she touched him his cock stood straight up and he couldn’t think of anything but possessing and devouring her.
He’d never felt like this about anyone. It scared the hell out of him, and yet he wanted more of it, all the time.
He moved his hands to the sides of her neck and brushed back the hair from her shoulders, looking down into her eyes.
“Thank you for coming to meet my pack,” he said. “And for playing that stupid game with them.”
“Don’t try to kid me, Kane,” she said. Her body swayed toward him and her voice grew husky. Her warmth, her scent, were driving him crazy. “You had fun. Just because you’re not man enough to own up to it doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.”
He inched closer to her. “I will never admit to that,” he said. “You can’t make me.”
