Switch said, “We didn’t lose anyone, did we?”

Dealer shook his head. “Everyone accounted for.” They both breathed a sigh of relief. Dealer hesitated, then said, “Moreno is dead, though.”

Breanna covered Switch’s hand with hers. “I know.” It was a silent acknowledgement of what he’d done for her.

“You okay?” he asked her. She knew what he meant.

She nodded. “He was going to torture me, if I didn’t give him the passwords. Then he was going to kill me.”

Breanna toyed with her doughnut, then asked, “Did they say what happened to Kimberly? Was she hurt when the ceiling collapsed?”

Dealer shook his head. “She got out before it happened. They found her wandering around outside with a concussion, that’s all. Better than she deserved.”

“Agreed,” Switch growled.

“They’re keeping her in custody too,” Dealer said. “If you want to see her.”

Breanna didn’t. She didn’t need to see Kimberly ever again.

They sat and waited for the team to come back, Breanna wrapped in a spare blanket and snuggled up against Switch. She’d rebandaged his arm, and the bleeding had stopped now that he wasn’t insisting on using it.

He was holding her hand, fingers interlaced with hers. Breanna said to him, “So now that everything has calmed down, I have a couple of very important questions.”

“Go ahead.” He rubbed his thumb over her knuckles, and then raised her hand and kissed it.

“First, how the hell did you get Eddy Arnold to play in Quentin’s office?”

Switch grinned. “Pure genius, of course. Once we found out where you were, Rex was trying to hack into their security system, and kept bitching about picking up their music instead. So when we got ready to move, I had him patch in the song. I was hoping it would give you a heads-up.”

“It did.” She told them how she’d used the distraction to escape from Quentin’s office, and Dealer laughed his ass off when he heard how she’d taken out the guard. “And then I blocked their pursuit with the grenades. One in the elevator and one in the stairwell, after I got down.”

“Shit,” Dealer said. “You have to tell Boomer. He’ll love it.”

Switch said, “What about your other important question?”

“Whose fucking idea was it for my code name to be Cookie Monster?”

Chapter 39

Three weeks later

Breanna and Switch sat on the roof of their cabin, watching Boomer’s latest fireworks display. Also drinking bourbon and eating cheese-stuffed pretzel bites and chocolate-chip cookies.

She’d had no idea what she was missing by not letting herself eat junk food all this time.

“Sanchez is right,” Switch said, taking a bite of cookie. “These are really good dipped in bourbon.”

“Who knew?”

A huge firework exploded into the sky, raining down sparkly flowers. All the wolves on the ground applauded, with whistles and howls.

They were celebrating the official unveiling of the plans for the barn renovation, provided by Bearcat Construction out of Tennessee—shifter friends of Michelangela’s. Apparently, there was going to be some sketchy back-room dealing with the county to allow one of her other friends to oversee the building project, even though he wasn’t a licensed contractor in New York state.

Switch said, “I can’t believe you kicked in some of your own money from the bonds to finance some of the upgrades for the Ridge.”

“It seemed only fair,” Breanna said. “If it wasn’t for Dealer and Sugar forging those copies for me to take to Quentin, we wouldn’t have had the money at all. And then Thanatos arranged for them to be cashed in.”

“Good thing, too,” Switch said. “From what I heard, those were some seriously shady people you would have had to deal with.” He kissed her. “I’m glad you didn’t have to.”
