Doe eyes.

That gave her a little jolt, and she looked at Kimberly more carefully. No bruises on her face. And she had makeup on. Subtle, but it was there.

Would Quentin really let her keep her makeup? And if he was trying to scare Kimberly into submission by hurting her, wouldn’t he start with her face? Her beautiful face. Her one thing.

She could hear Boomer’s brother in the back of her mind. Don’t trust anyone but your team. Ever.

She said gently to Kimberly, “I’m sorry. You poor thing. Let me see.” She reached for Kimberly’s arm, to pull up her sleeve and look for bruises there.

Kimberly jerked away. “That doesn’t matter. You have to give Quentin what he wants.”

So maybe Kimberly didn’t want her to see there were no bruises at all? Was she really in league with Quentin?

But why drug Breanna? That was the part she didn’t understand. “Why did he take me? I gave him the bearer bonds.”

Kimberly sniffled. “It’s those damn passwords. You’re the one who memorized them. I didn’t have a chance.”

Holy hell. Realization swept through her. Anyone could use the bearer bonds. And the protocols for cashing them in—they were in the envelope. But the passwords weren’t.

She’d thought Quentin already had that information, from Kimberly.

But Breanna was the only one who had them. And Quentin would do anything to get them—even torture.

Look what he’d done to Adrienne.

She wished she knew how long she had—if the backup team was in motion.

Because they were coming after her. Even if Switch—

No. She wasn’t going there. Werewolves were tough, and he was wearing a vest. If there was any way he could move, he’d come for her.

And even if he couldn’t, her friends would. It was what they did.

She’d never in her life believed anyone would come through for her, but she had to believe it now.

Kimberly shook her arm. “Breanna? Bree, are you listening to me?”

Not Are you okay, which was what she’d have said. What a friend would say.

Her stomach filled with the cold certainty that Kimberly was not on her side.

Bree bit her lip, hard, to keep herself under control. Kimberly had to believe she was fooled. “I heard you,” she said. “I’m just scared.”

“But it will be okay,” Kimberly said. “All he wants is the passwords. And then they’ll let us both go. Please.”

She couldn’t possibly be that naïve. More likely she’d made a deal with Quentin—or thought she had. He’d probably promised to cut her in.

In reality, he’d probably keep them imprisoned until he actually used the passwords, so he’d know she’d been telling the truth. He no doubt planned to kill them once he had the money.

And that was going to be a problem, unless the wolves found them first.

At that moment they heard footsteps outside, and then someone unlocked the door.

“Please,” Kimberly said, looking at her imploringly with the doe eyes. “Just tell him. Get us out of here.”

The door was opened by some of the SWAT minions, armed and looking at her with stony eyes. “Get up,” one of them said. “Mr. Moreno wants to see you. If I were you, I’d give him exactly what he wants.”

One guard left them outside Quentin’s office, but the other went in with them.
