“Well, technically they’re your pants,” she said. “Or…” she frowned. “I guess not. Community pants? Gunn’s pants?”
“No. No one is ever going to be allowed to say I ripped Gunn’s pants off.”
He grabbed the blanket off the back of the couch, and then didn’t know whether to wrap it around himself or her.
He decided to give it to her. Then he was disappointed when she covered herself up.
Breanna stood up, holding the blanket around herself. She said, “Thanks for saving me from the big bad wolves.” She touched his shoulder, and then went quickly into the bedroom and shut the door.
Switch felt all weird inside, like everything had turned to jelly. He knew he was doing the right thing by stopping this now, but it didn’t feel right.
It felt totally, completely wrong.
He found a pair of discarded jeans near the front door and put them on. He walked to the bedroom, raised his hand to knock, and then changed his mind and walked away. But that felt wrong too, so he went back to her door and stood there, rubbing his hand across the back of his neck.
After a minute he knocked.
“Come in.”
He opened the door.
“I just wanted…” He didn’t know what he wanted. “I mean, are you all right? Do you have everything you need?
“Yeah.”
They stared at each other.
He said, “Thanks for tonight.” Shit. That was stupid. “I mean, for coming into the woods after me. That was brave.”
She said, “I’m sorry you got into a fight because of me.”
He shrugged that off. One fight more or less was pretty much immaterial. He said, “So… we’re okay, right? About the sex being one-time thing? Because it wouldn’t be good for us to… you know.”
She nodded in agreement. “No. We can’t. It would be crazy. We’re completely different people.”
“From different worlds.”
“It would never work.”
“Right.”
They still stared at each other.
It was like a magnet pulling them together. One minute they were across the room from each other, and the next somehow they were plastered together, kissing like there was no tomorrow.
Because there wasn’t.
But there was tonight.
And what if tomorrow never came?
Chapter 18
The next morning, Switch was awakened way too early by the sound of cupboard doors opening and closing in the kitchen.
He was in bed, surrounded by Breanna’s scent, which had to be a dream. Ditto the hazy memories of her naked, doing all the things he’d always fantasized about doing with her. Which couldn’t have happened in real life.
But it was a fucking amazing dream, and he didn’t want to wake up from it. He closed his eyes tighter, hoping dream Breanna would start ravishing his body. He reached for her—and there was no one there.
