How fast could those damn wolves run?
She found out when she rounded the next curve. A wolf burst out of the woods ahead of her and stopped right in the middle of the road, facing her. She could see his eyes gleaming in the dark.
Michelangela bit her lip, hesitated, and then stomped down on the accelerator.
The wolf didn’t move.
Fuck. She didn’t want to hit one of Gunn’s wolves full-on. But she couldn’t stop, either. Move, she told him in her mind. Move, you idiot!
He did. As she bore down on him, he took a massive leap—right onto the hood of the pickup. Before she could react he’d jumped onto the roof of the cab, pounding like thunder, and landed in the truck bed, snarling.
Chapter 19
Michelangela got that oh shit adrenalin spike that made everything feel like it was moving in slow motion.
She hit the brakes hard, sending the wolf slamming into the back of the cab, her seat shuddering with the impact. Then she hit the accelerator, spinning the wheels before the truck leaped forward.
The wolf slid the other way, paws scrabbling, and hit the tailgate. It opened, dumping him on the pavement.
At the same time, her wolf sat up inside her, pricking up her ears. Mate!
The wolf was Gunn.
Without thinking, she hit the brakes again. The truck slewed around and skidded sideways, ending with one wheel in a ditch. It stuck.
Michelangela shoved the door open and jumped out into the road. The wolf scrambled to its feet, shaking itself. Its eyes glowed gold.
There were so many feelings tumbling around inside her, she couldn’t catch any of them. She opened her mouth and yelling came out.
“What the hell was that? Who tries to stop a moving truck by fucking jumping on the hood? I could have killed you! I could have killed me! I told you not to come after me! You are so fucking…” She couldn’t even. Michelangela leaned down, grabbed a rock from the side of the road and threw it at him.
The wolf dodged.
“And now the damn truck is in a ditch.” She stomped around to the back of it and inspected the stuck wheel. “How far away are your guys?”
Gunn’s voice came from behind her. “Hopefully, they haven’t figured out I’m gone yet. You planning on getting this thing out of the ditch by yourself?”
Great. He’d Changed. Now he was naked in the road. She wasn’t even going to look. “Who says I can’t? I have shifter strength.”
She thought she heard a tiny snort behind her, but she ignored it. Damned if she wasn’t going to get this thing on the road.
“And don’t try to stop me from going after that girl!” she added. “I’m doing it.”
She really did hear the snort that time, but she didn’t care. She put her hands underneath the corner of the truck bed and heaved.
It went easily up in the air, and she looked up, startled, to see Gunn on the other side, smirking at her. They moved the end of the truck onto the road and he walked around to her side. Yep, he was naked, all his muscles outlined in the moonlight.
It was very distracting.
Gunn leaned over and whispered into her ear, “Just because you can do everything by yourself, doesn’t mean you have to.”
Look who was talking.
He vaulted up into the truck bed and flipped open a small panel on the built-in toolbox along the back of the cab, entering a key code. Without turning around, he said, “Stop staring at my ass. Perv.”
“What makes you think I have any interest in your muddy wolf ass right now? It has leaves stuck to it.”
“So you are looking.”
