She smiled at him. “I hope some of those places have people in them.”

He shrugged.

Jaeda said, “You reached into the real world and pulled me here. Can you put me back?” She sure as hell hoped so. She and Remy both had dragon friends who could travel in the spirit world, but she really didn’t want to wait around here until he had a chance to go ask them to look for her.

“Of course I can,” he said. “Not where you were, though. I think a wall fell on it.”

That made her worry for Remy again. “Can you put me somewhere else?”

“Take your pick.” He waved his hand, and it was like a window opened into the real world. He scrolled through it with a flick of his fingers, like scrolling across a computer screen. She saw the destroyed building, and glimpses of Brandon and Brock overpowering some of Sutcliffe’s men. The battle was almost over.

She was about to ask if he could find Remy, when she saw something else. Sutcliffe, making a run for one of the black SUVs parked near the entrance. There was no one else near him. He was getting away.

“I have to stop that sonovabitch—he’s the one who tried to kill us. Can you put me…” she surveyed the scene. “There?” She pointed.

The boy grinned. “I can put you anywhere.”

The landscape spun around them, and then it was like they were standing in the access road outside the gate, watching through the ‘window’ as Sutcliffe started up the SUV. He made a u-turn in the parking area and headed for the gate.

The boy moved his hand in a vertical line, and the window became an opening. Jaeda felt the chilly fall air, smelled the dust and smoke, heard the sound of the SUV’s engine as it came toward them.

She felt a shove in her back, and stumbled forward.

She was standing in the road, dressed in her jeans and ragged top. The SUV blew through the gate and headed down the road.

She had no weapons. The only way to stop him was to Change.

With all her might, she called on the animals she knew. Her first animal, the leopard. Then the wolf, her natural form. The owl.

None of them would come to her call. She wasn’t a shifter, she was a mimic. All she had inside her was a damn formless blob.

I can do this, she told herself. A polar bear can stop this thing. I am the bear. I am the bear.

Nothing happened.

Rage and frustration filled her. For all the harm Sutcliffe had done, all the people he’d hurt.

For what he’d tried to do to her.

For him feeling entitled to get rid of her and Colt. For enjoying it.

The white light inside her grew as the SUV raced toward her.

I WILL CHANGE!

Power rippled through her, and she Changed.

Chapter 34

From the sky, Remy could see the whole scene. Brandon, Kitty, and Callie were grouped on the hospital’s front lawn, with a row of bound men lying on the ground in front of them. Here and there was a crumpled body.

On the other side of the grounds he saw Squatch and Brock, marching a couple of prisoners towards the others.

All his people were safe.

Except Jaeda.

Suddenly, he saw movement near the gatehouse. Someone running for one of the SUVs parked nearby.
