“Then you first.”

She realigned the broken bone in his forearm and bound it tightly with strips torn from his shirt, sending more thanks to the people who’d taught her first aid.

“You should have a splint for this,” she said.

“Awesome. Let me know when one drops out of the sky.”

They moved on to Fernandez, Jaeda moving the rubble off his legs. “Doesn’t feel like he broke anything, but that knee is fucked up,” Colt said, feeling along the bones with his good hand.

Jaeda did what she could for it, and they bound that up too.

“So now what?” Colt asked.

“Does Fernandez have a phone? Or a radio?”

Jaeda looked for the radio while Colt searched Fernandez’ pockets.

“No radio,” she said.

Colt found the phone, its screen smashed. “And no phone.” He threw it across the room.

Fuck, fuck fuck fuck. Jaeda gave a frustrated scream, and then took a deep breath. “Then we dig.”

Overhead, the ceiling creaked ominously. Jaeda looked up. In the pool of light cast by the flashlight, she saw widening cracks.

“Dig fast,” Colt said.

Remy soon found out it was one thing to know where Colt and Jaeda were. It was another to fucking get there.

The inside of the place was a labyrinth, and too many of the access points were cut off. It was obvious that a lot of the explosive charges in the lower part of this section of the building hadn’t gone off; he suspected Colt had found a way to pull the detonation cords.

But the charges on the top floors had gone, and the weight of them falling had caused partial collapses everywhere, blocking the halls with rubble.

The rest of it could come down at any time.

He needed a direction he could follow.

He closed his eyes, trying to picture the blue lines of light he’d seen in the spirit world that connected him to the people he loved. When he opened his eyes, he saw a misty form in the hallway in front of him.

The Dragon Boy. The boy said in his mind, You are looking for the spirit woman. The soul-stealer. I told you to stay away.

“With all due respect,” Remy said, “Fuck that. She’s my mate, and she’s trapped in here, in my world, with my brother. So if you can’t help me, shut up and get the fuck out of my way.”

The boy’s image wavered. He looked shocked. Your mate?

“Yep. My mate and her animal were separated somehow, and her animal never got a form of its own. That’s who you saw me with in the spirit world. She wasn’t trying to steal anything. She was just trying to figure out what she was.”

I didn’t know.

“Now you do.” Remy tried to soften his voice, even though everything in him was screaming Leave this kid and find them! “Listen, if there’s any way you can see them from where you are, can you give me some idea how to get to them? I know the direction, but I can’t get there. Everything’s blocked off.”

The boy waved his hand, and suddenly Colt could see the faint blue lines streaming past him, right through the wall. Dragon Boy turned and looked, as if he could see through the barriers.

Hell, maybe he could.

After a moment he said, Yes. This way. And he floated off down the hall, Remy right behind him. He just hoped Dragon Boy knew what the fuck he was doing.

Colt boosted Jaeda up so she could dig through the rubble at the top, trying to create a tunnel where they could crawl out without the rest of it falling down and crushing them.
