But that was for later. Right now, she had a mission. She had to get the truck and a new phone and meet Remy. They were going to rescue his brother, and then they were freaking going to take Sutcliffe down.
She went down the hall to the loading dock. The main garage door was closed, but there was a side door next to it.
She cracked it open and checked the area. No one—there were just a couple of dim lights in the loading area. She pushed the door open and went out into the alley.
She was almost to the street when she got a prickling sensation at the back of her neck. The next moment, someone loomed up in front of her.
Smith. Jaeda froze.
He held up her phone, smiling. “You looking for this?” He shook his head. “Shouldn’t have left it in the room. We would never have known you were here. So careless.”
She began to back up slowly, but he didn’t move. Why wasn’t he—
There was a soft whump behind her and then a dart stung the back of her neck.
She heard Smith laughing as she passed out.
Chapter 30
Remy got off the phone, swearing, and passed the message to Brandon and the others.
This whole meeting had been a fucking setup, and now Sutcliffe had Colt.
They gathered back at their vehicles. Remy already had his laptop out, looking for any buildings Sutcliffe or Stuyvesant had access to that would fit what Jaeda had overheard. “Mental hospitals… mental hospitals…” he muttered as he typed.
“That seems weird,” Kitty said. “Sutcliffe doesn’t have medical connections. Why wouldn’t he take Colt to a construction site? They’re empty, deserted—great places to hold a prisoner. Or—”
Or get rid of a body. Everyone went silent.
Then something clicked in Remy’s mind. “You’re right,” he said. “I know I saw something…” It seemed to take forever for his search to run, but finally he had it.
“Sunnyhaven Hospital,” he said. “It’s almost a hundred years old, out in the country, and it’s a Stuyvesant property. It’s been abandoned for years—they’re planning on building a new building on the site. The old hospital is scheduled for demolition…” He scrolled down, and his stomach went cold as ice. “…tomorrow,” he finished.
“That’s the place,” Brandon said. “Where is it?”
He sent the address to their phones. “Fuck,” Brandon said. “It’s an hour away from where we are.”
“And only twenty minutes from the hotel,” Kitty said. “They’ll be there in ten minutes.”
“We should have time,” Brock said. “If they’re not demoing the building until tomorrow…”
“It doesn’t mean Sutcliffe won’t kill Colt tonight,” Remy said. “You all drive. I’m flying.”
He was already peeling out of his clothes. He said to Brandon, “I told Jaeda to call you for the location—she’ll be on a burn phone. But tell her to stay put.”
“You’ve got to be kidding,” Kitty said. “You really think she’ll sit around waiting for other people to rescue Colt? Or let you do it without her?”
They all waited. “Okay, fine,” Remy said. “But try to keep her out of it.” He had to get used to being mated to a badass woman. No one had told him how hard it would be.
“I’ll give it my best shot,” Brandon said. “Fly safe, brother.”
They all reached out to touch him briefly, and then he shifted and flew off into the night.
Jaeda woke up to a horrible smell that made her sinuses burn, and a noxious taste in her mouth.
And Ethan Sutcliffe was slapping her.
She lunged at him before she was even all the way conscious, but she was chained to a pillar in what looked like an abandoned building.
