“Brock would be awesome,” Jaeda said. “We grew up together. He’d never rat me out. The problem is, he went through a bad time a while back and took off. No one knows where he is.”

“Actually,” Remy said, “I do.”

“You do?” Jaeda twisted to look up at him.

“Yeah. He’s in Colorado. After you told me you had an animal but you didn’t know where it was, I thought maybe that’s what I was seeing in the spirit world. Your animal. I wanted to ask Brock about it.”

“Did you talk to him?” Brandon asked.

“Not yet. I was busy with the case.”

“Call him now.”

Remy got his laptop and looked up Brock’s information, and then made the call. Brock was wary and hesitant at first, but as Remy tried to explain what had happened, he got more and more interested. Finally he said, “Can you put Jaeda on?”

Remy watched Jaeda’s face as she talked to Brock. They were obviously close, or had been at one time, and she relaxed as she answered his questions. Towards the end of the conversation, Jaeda put him on speaker.

“I’ll come out there as soon as I can, but I have some things to wrap up here, and I need to figure out transport. My beater of a car won’t make it that far.”

Brandon said, “Can you fly? I’ll send you a ticket.”

“Sorry, man,” Brock said. “My wolf and enclosed spaces don’t get along.”

“I hear you. Me, either.”

Colt said, “Can you make it to Telluride? I had to leave my truck there a couple weeks ago. I’ll tell the guest house it’s parked at that you’re coming to get it, and you can drive it back here. You’d be doing me a favor.”

“Sweet,” Brock said. “Tell me where.”

Colt gave him the info on the hotel. Brandon added, “You’re doing all of us a favor. I’ll send you expense money for the trip.”

“Thanks, man. See you soon, Jaeda.”

“Can’t wait. Drive safe.”

Brock cut the call, and they all looked at each other. “So what do we do now?” Callie said.

“Eat,” Jaeda said, “I’m starving.”

Chapter 26

That evening, they left the safe house to go back to the Wild Blood territory.

“You’re blown with Sutcliffe anyway, so there’s no point in staying in Louisville,” Brandon said. “And your apartment is out of the question. Too many risks.”

Jaeda opened her mouth, and the alpha—her alpha, now—fixed his gaze on her. He was dark and broody, and she could feel the dominance that he usually kept damped down. “More important, you’re a new shifter who was Turned by someone in my crew—” he glared at Remy—“which makes you my responsibility. Until you can control your Changes, you do what I say.”

Okay then. She closed her mouth. She’d learned that Brandon was usually a relaxed alpha, like her dad, and probably for the same reason—his crew was full of people he’d grown up brawling and trading insults with, and they weren’t going to kowtow to him any more than necessary.

But she was suddenly aware that he was perfectly capable of keeping discipline, if he needed to.

“I didn’t Turn her on purpose,” Remy said. “I keep telling you that.”

Brandon just shook his head and muttered something about Bali.

The territory was just outside a tiny little town a little more than an hour away from Louisville.

Jaeda loved it on sight. A huge old mansion with a scraggly lawn sloping up to a forest of tall trees, it had a wraparound porch and little balconies jutting out here and there.
